About
The venue opened in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, founded by riverboat captain Thomas Ryman. After Ryman’s death in 1904, the building came to be known as Ryman Auditorium. The Grand Ole Opry relocated to the Ryman in 1943 and remained there for nearly 31 years until March 15, 1974, an era that established the venue as a birthplace of bluegrass music. After standing largely vacant for roughly 20 years, the property was acquired by Gaylord Entertainment Company in 1989 and underwent comprehensive renovations, reopening in June 1994 as a performance venue and museum. The Ryman was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001 and a Rock & Roll Landmark in May 2022. Recurring programming includes Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman, CMA Fest at the Ryman, and Opry 100 at the Ryman.
