The Nashville Youth Hockey League (NYHL) is a youth ice hockey organization serving the greater Nashville and Middle Tennessee area. According to its website, the league has operated “since 1964” and is “dedicated to growing youth hockey in the greater Nashville area.” As a member of USA Hockey, the NYHL offers both recreational house leagues and competitive travel hockey programs so that, in its words, “boys and girls can experience the best that Nashville has to offer in youth hockey.” The league describes itself as the headquarters for youth hockey in Middle Tennessee, with programs built for players ranging from first-time skaters to seasoned athletes.
Services
The NYHL offers a progression of programs designed to take players from their first time on the ice through high-level competition:
- Learn to Play Program: Part of the NHL’s Learn to Play initiative, aimed at children ages 5 to 9. It includes 6 weeks of ice time and instruction, brand-new equipment from head to toe included with registration, and certified coaches. The program is open to first-time participants only, and a Learn to Skate program is strongly encouraged beforehand.
- House League: A recreational, local league for players who have built foundational skills. The season runs October to March, with weekly games and practices at Centennial Sportsplex. Age groups are Termites (6U), Mites (8U), Squirt (10U), Pee Wee (12U), and Bantam (14U) / Midget (16U). Jersey and socks are included in league fees, USA Hockey registration is required, and full equipment is required.
- All-Stars Travel Program: A limited-travel program for House League players ready for higher-level competition, with a season from mid-December to early March. Age groups include Squirt (10U), Pee Wee (12U), and Bantam (14U), with weekly practices and 3 to 4 tournaments.
- Nashville Flyers Travel Hockey Program: The league’s competitive travel program for ages 10U through 18U, running August through March. Teams compete in the Southeastern Showcase League (SESCL) and the Southern Youth Travel Hockey League (SYTHL) at Tier II AA, A1, and A2 levels.
- 8U (Mite) Travel Program: An introductory travel option for 8U players, with travel to two or three locations within a 2 to 3 hour radius.
