About
The building was constructed between 1929 and 1932 and, according to the studio’s history, was built by Chicago figure John P. Welch as a retreat between Chicago and Florida, incorporating a hidden passageway and an underground cellar. After Welch’s death in 1945, the property passed through several uses, including a gourmet restaurant in the late 1940s that the site says hosted celebrities such as Bob Hope, Spencer Tracy, and Betty Grable, followed by use as a riding academy and later a private residence. In 1979 the Nuyens family, described as a European bluegrass group, purchased the property, and Jozef Nuyens established Castle Recording Studios in 1983. The site notes that more than 500 gold and platinum artists have recorded breakout albums at the studio and references country music artists who have worked there, including Billy Ray Cyrus, Brooks and Dunn, John Michael Montgomery, and Faith Hill.
