Amy Powell Studio is the studio and portfolio site of Amy Powell, a figurative sculptor based in Nashville, Tennessee. Amy is a self-taught sculptor who works primarily in terra cotta, focusing on the human figure, and presents her work across categories such as portrait sculpture, figurative sculpture, wall and wood pieces, and canvas work. In addition to her own art, Amy created the Sculpt and Gulp workshop program, which brings sculptors and students of all skill levels together to learn in her Nashville studio. The site functions as both a showcase of her sculptures and an introduction to her teaching and workshops.
Services
Amy Powell Studio centers on figurative sculpture and related art and instruction, including:
- Figurative and portrait sculpture, working primarily in terra cotta
- Wall, wood, and “curiosities” pieces, plus canvas work
- Sculpt and Gulp sculpting workshops hosted by the studio
- Individual and group instruction for all skill levels, led by local, regional, and nationally recognized instructors
The studio’s Sculpt and Gulp program is described as “a safe and fun environment where fundamentals of sculpting and intuition both are honored,” welcoming students of all skill levels. The workshops feature locally and nationally recognized instructors, and Amy herself often teaches alongside what she calls her “tribe” of creatives. The site references specific workshop sessions, such as a June 2016 Sculpt and Gulp figure workshop with instructor Russ Faxon, illustrating how the program pairs students with experienced sculptors for hands-on learning.
About
According to her biography, Amy Powell is “a self-taught figurative sculptor working primarily in terra cotta.” Before sculpting, she lived in Nashville and performed at venues including Opryland USA, the Opryland Hotel, and Gaylord Entertainment as a singer, dancer, actress, and pianist. The arts were present throughout her life, beginning in her childhood in rural Michigan. She describes returning to clay after a painful loss, later studying with mentors including Alan LeQuire and the late Murat Kaboulov, who she says guided her while respecting her intuition and her lack of formal training. Her portrait bust “Julia” and figurative piece “Emily” were accepted into the Scottsdale Artists’ School Best and Brightest juried art shows in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
In her artist’s statement, Amy describes a compulsion to sculpt and a goal of “authenticity and honesty,” working “from the inside out, emphasizing the emotional landscape surrounding the subject.” Trained in clinical psychology, she notes that she builds solid figures on simple armatures, sometimes using live models, herself, or her imagination, and may deliberately compromise or exaggerate anatomy to capture “the feel and mood of a subject” rather than a literal interpretation. She also describes herself as a wife and mother of two young boys with a busy clinical outpatient practice. Her listed training includes study with Alicia Ponzio in San Francisco, Jerry Cox and Simon Kogan in Scottsdale, and Jammie Williams, Murat Kaboulov, and Alan LeQuire in Nashville.
