About
According to the distillery, founder Charles Nelson (1835 to 1891) was a German immigrant who built a whiskey business in Nashville, eventually purchasing a distillery in Greenbrier, Tennessee. The site notes that in 1885 Charles Nelson sold nearly 380,000 gallons of Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey. After his death in 1891, his wife Louisa took over operations, becoming, in the company’s words, “one of the only women of her time to run a distillery.” The original distillery closed during Prohibition in 1909. In 2006, descendants Charlie and Andy Nelson discovered their connection to Charles through genealogical research and revived the distillery, which underwent a major renovation in 2023. The distillery is part of Constellation Brands, Inc., headquartered in Rochester, New York.
