About
The venue traces its origins to a songwriter venue that began in the early 1980s, “almost the same time as the famous Bluebird where they often competed for talent each night.” According to the company’s account, songwriter host Steven Farmer once convinced Vince Gill to perform in exchange for cheesecake, and staff have reported visits over the years from artists including Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Britney Spears, KISS, and Prince.
The space has had several earlier iterations. It previously operated as the Ivories Piano Lounge and housed The Commodore Club, where, in the company’s words, “Vanderbilt fans and alumni alike would gather around a large boat located in the center of the room.” From 2001 to 2008 it functioned as the Commodore Sports Bar & Grille with more than 20 televisions before returning to its songwriter roots.
Today the venue presents nightly Songwriter Rounds and Open Mic events. Regular programming includes Debi Champion’s Songwriter Nights and the Nashville Songwriter’s Showcase with Jimmy and Anna-Lisa. The Commodore Grille describes itself as the “home” of 1994 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Foster.

The venue presents itself as a destination where guests can hear original songs performed by the songwriters who wrote them, and it frames its programming around the Nashville songwriter tradition. In its own account of its history, the venue competed for songwriter talent with the Bluebird in the early years and has since hosted recurring showcase nights led by established host agents.

The venue maintains a presence on Instagram and has, in past seasons, offered special events such as a Mother’s Day Brunch. The on-site coffee shop, The Brew, operates on its own daily schedule of 6:30 am to 1:00 pm and serves Bongo Java locally roasted coffee, giving the location a daytime coffee service in addition to its breakfast, dinner, and nightly live music offerings.
