About
The parish describes itself as Jesus-centered, liturgical, and multi-generational. It is founded on God’s love and grace and the teachings of Jesus Christ, follows Episcopal Church traditions using the Book of Common Prayer for worship, celebrates Holy Communion, and emphasizes participation across all age groups in church ministries.
The congregation traces a long history in Nashville. In 1829, the Reverend James Otey founded Christ Church in Nashville. In 1848, the Reverend Charles Tomes became rector, and a conflict arose over free versus rented pews. In 1851, eight families left Christ Church to establish Church of the Advent; the Reverend Tomes accepted the call but died before preaching. In 1857, Dr. Charles Quintard, a physician-turned-clergyman, became the second rector. The first church building was consecrated in downtown Nashville in 1887, and the parish relocated to 17th Avenue South and Edgehill in 1911. From 1916 to 1955, Dr. Prentice Pugh served as rector and mentored fourteen men toward ordination. In 1973, the parish relocated to the Oak Hill area, where the current sanctuary was consecrated.
