The Southern Steak & Oyster was opened in 2012 and was founded by Tom Morales, a Nashville native who established TomKats Hospitality. Morales opened TomKats Catering in 1986, providing farm-to-table catering for touring musicians. He later operated the Harbor Docks seafood restaurant in Destin, Florida, founded Saffire Restaurant in Franklin, Tennessee, and helped save the Loveless Cafe from demolition in 2003. His other Nashville ventures include Acme Feed & Seed and Southernaire Market.
The restaurant’s Executive Chef is Matt Farley, who states that the most important thing is having honest food that brings out the flavors of good, simple ingredients. The restaurant frames its approach around locally-sourced beef, sustainable seafood, and locally-grown produce when available, paired with its shuck-to-order oyster bar and hickory wood-fired grill.
